The challenge of teaching quantum physics to non-physicists

As quantum technologies take off and the demand for a quantum-literate workforce increases, quantum physics education must expand beyond the narrow limits of physics departments and reach students of other scientific and technical disciplines, such as engineering and computer science.

This poses a didactical challenge, as the key concepts of quantum physics must me conveyed with as little math and as few references to other areas of physics as possible – without trivializing or oversimplifying the subject. In this talk, I report on first experiences with a (still ongoing) course on quantum technology for computer scientists and engineers at RheinMain University of Applied Sciences. I will discuss the overall approach, the selection of topics, as well as the use of demonstration experiments, visualizations, and online games and simulators.
