PTB's Planck balance -- Big mass metrology for the little ones

In 2019, the International System of Units (SI) was redefined. For many, this went by without a hitch -- and that's how it should be.

For the kilogram, however, this was a huge event. The unit is now no longer defined by the International Prototype Kilogram (IPK), i.e. an artefact, but by a fundamental constant, the Planck constant. There are currently two ways of realising the unit from its definition, the XRCD method and the Kibble balance. The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has mastered both methods, with the Kibble balance at the PTB focussing on small mass values. In my presentation, I will briefly describe both methods of realisation and then go into more detail about the Planck balance, PTB's compact Kibble balance.
