Rethinking Academia: The scientific publishing system and the strive for open accessibility

Young scientists of IQOQI-Vienna and the University of Vienna are organizing an event aimed at discussing future perspectives of the scientific publishing system and present concrete alternatives to its current structure.

Rethinking Academia is an initiative aimed at organizing events (e.g., panel discussions, talks) to spread awareness about the current structural controversies emerged within academics. The academic environment is, in fact, facing a number of systemic problems — such as inclusiveness, the organisation of scientific publishing, and the attribution of funding — that hardly find dedicated platforms where they can be discussed by researchers.

The first meeting organised within this framework focuses on the scientific publishing system, which plays a fundamental role in science, inasmuch as scientific findings are proclaimed and evaluated through scholarly journals. Yet, the publishing system is engaged in multiple controversies: the problem of open accessibility, the justification of retaining the authority to evaluate the relevance of scientific work, and the lucrative aspect of private publishers are only some of them. The aim of this public debate is hence to facilitate stimulating discussions on the current working machinery of the publishing system, in order to incentive an active participation in the controversy of whether the publishing system shall be revised given the different level of accessibility that the use of internet enables.
