The physicist was appointed new director of IQOQI Vienna on July 1, 2019.

Markus Aspelmeyer studied physics and philosophy in Munich, Germany. After earning a PhD in solid-state physics (LMU Munich), he switched to the field of quantum optics. In 2009 Aspelmeyer became Full Professor at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Vienna, Austria. His research combines the development of new quantum technologies with fundamental quantum experiments. Aspelmeyer is regarded as one of the pioneers of the field of quantum optomechanics.

For his contributions to quantum science and technological innovation he was awarded several prizes, among them the Science Prize of the City of Vienna, the Leibinger Innovation Prize, the Ignaz Lieben Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), the Bessel Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), and the Fresnel Prize of the European Physical Society (EPS). He is Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and of the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg, and a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. He is also a founding member and present Spokesperson of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ), and Spokesperson of the Vienna graduate programme on Complex Quantum Systems (CoQuS).
