How does a quantum particle see the world?
    30.01.2019
Physical systems are always described relative to a reference frame. For example, a ball bouncing on a railway platform can be observed either from the platform itself or from a passing train. A funda

Quantum times: when did the cuckoo sing?
    29.05.2020
We are used to the fact that events are sharply localised in time. In a cuckoo clock, the cuckoo always calls at a precise time. Everybody looking at the clock would agree on this. However, a team of physicists led by Caslav Brukner from the University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences showed that, when quantum mechanics and Einstein’s general relativity are combined, this might no longer be the case. When time “goes quantum” the temporal localisability of events becomes relative. In quantum times, the cuckoo can call at a precise time according to one observer, but some other observers might be totally uncertain about the time when it sings.

Algorithm determines new blueprint for quantum systems
    21.08.2020
With the help of the computer algorithm Melvin, quantum researchers from the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the University of Vienna have developed a new approach to manipulate complex constellations of entangled light particles in a targeted manner. The method published in the journal "Physical Review Letters" could prove to be extremely valuable for the creation of quantum computers.
