Quantum reference frames, and type reduction in quantum field theory

In the presence of symmetry, the observables of a quantum field theory are described relative to a quantum reference frame (QRF).

This yields a joint algebra of observables of system and frame which is invariant under an action of the group of spacetime isometries, which in some cases of interest is parameterised in terms of a crossed product. Though the field algebra is typically a type III von Neumann algebra, I will describe the conditions under which the invariant algebra admits a (semi)-finite trace, i.e., is a type II algebra, and will highlight the role played by non-ideal QRFs.  This work is based on arXiv:2403.11973 (Fewster, Janssen, Loveridge, Rejzner and Waldron).
