Optimal discrimination of optical modes

In several quantum information tasks, notably in the fields of quantum communication, cryptography, and sensing, classical information is encoded not in a quantum state but in an optical mode.

In this talk, I shall describe mode discrimination, both probabilistic and unambiguous, following and some unpublished material. The tools are adaptations of those for state discrimination or channel discrimination, but the formulation of the problem itself requires some finesse of physics.
