Onset of coherence in nonequilibrium condensates

In the first half of this talk, I will review the status of experiments on Bose-Einstein condensation of polaritons ("heavy photons"), including the transition from nonequilibrium behavior to true equilibrium behavior as their lifetime is increased relative to their thermalization time.

In the second half of the talk I will discuss how these experiments, as well as experiments with cold atom condensates, lead to very basic questions about how coherence appears in boson systems, which relate to the measurement problem of quantum mechanics.
