A connection between quantum correlations and spacetime geometry
    09.07.2019
the system confined in a spatial box for a limited time in which she can perform several measurements, such that all her measurements are performed within a 4-dimensional spacetime box. Bob is allowed to access the system in any point in spacetime which is outside of Alice's box. In this work, the authors investigate whether the boundary of this 4-dimensional spacetime region can tell us something about the degree of correlations between the outcomes of Alice's and Bob's ...

From Quantum in Pictures to practical Natural Language Processing, Music, and understandable AI.

our brain can be shaped according to those pictures. One consequence of this is that natural language really wants to live on a quantum computer, which is something that we meanwhile realised [3], and we have also made music with quantum computers [4]. All our software developed for doing so, lambeq and Quanthoven respectively, is freely available from GitHub, open-source, and well-documented and well-supported. You can have a go yourself! We show how these pictures also ...

    Pirates or Parasites?

guidance to make the results of taxpayer-supported research immediately available at no cost. [3] Will the next step make Sci-Hub legal? After all, the pirate website is just ignoring foreign copyright, which was indeed the official US policy before 1888 [4] . University students should know about it: the academic publishing system is undergoing systemic change and commercial publishers are not certain to win the game. To light up the minds, the Basic Research Community for ...

Building of a large Ytterbium MOT on the 1S0 -> 1P1 transition

atomic beam. In this beam, atoms with large angles are filtered by a capillary array up to a certain critical temperature. We then analyze the MOT loading rate on the broad 1S0 -> 1P1 transition as a function of different parameters with a maximum of L = 4x10^9 atoms/s. We show that light-assisted collisions are the main source of losses and give some ideas for the next steps using the intercombination line.

    Critical Quantum Sensing

thermodynamic limit is replaced with a rescaling of the system parameters. This class of phase transitions emerges in quantum resonators with atomic or Kerr-like nonlinearities, and it is of high theoretical and experimental relevance. Here, we show [3,4] that optimal quantum sensing protocols can be implemented using FCPTs taking place in small-scale solid-state quantum technologies, without the need to implement and control complex many-body systems. We then report on the ...

FQXi essay contest prize goes to Dr. Markus Müller
    24.05.2018
innovative and influential thinking", the Foundational Questions Institute - FQXi - hosts regular essay contests on "foundational questions in physics and cosmology". In this year's contest, IQOQI junior group leader Markus Müller has been awarded a 4th prize on the question of "What is fundamental?". In his essay, he describes personal experiences as a teenager that led him to work an "it from bit" view on physics, and how this view can reverse our standard perspective on ...
