Optimal discrimination of optical modes

In several quantum information tasks, notably in the fields of quantum communication, cryptography, and sensing, classical information is encoded not in a quantum state but in an optical mode. In this talk, I shall describe mode discrimination, both probabilistic and unambiguous, following [1] and some unpublished material. The tools are adaptations of those for state discrimination or channel discrimination, but the formulation of the problem itself requires some finesse of physics.
